Helping to address chronic absenteeism from school for seriously ill children

ABF’s Digital Learning Program (DLP) was developed to help address Chronic Absenteeism for the children we serve who attend school in the USA. Our Foundation believes that in order to effectively address this problem, children should have personal computers at home and their treating hospitals should have fully operating remote learning programs.

The only way educators can fulfill their promise of providing an education to their students, is to be able to give them the support they need to learn, grow and thrive through daily curriculum. Unfortunately, children with chronic illnesses tend to miss at least 15 days or more per school year putting them in danger of falling behind or failing. Because chronic illnesses such as childhood cancer have such a threat to life. Schooling is the last thing that’s taken into consideration when rendering treatment to a child that’s seriously ill, which is understandable. Children DO NOT want to be left behind because they are sick.

According to the National Library of Medicine, Pediatric Doctors and parents agree that chronically ill children receive insufficient support to address their academic and social emotional needs due to their absenteeism. There is a great need for children to continue schooling while recovering at home or in the hospital. ABF's digital learning program provides the tools needed to help address this nationwide issue for children coping with chronic diseases.

Next to a sick child's family their school and classmates become their biggest supporters when they are hospitalized. In their unfortunate abnormal lives, every last one of these Superhero Kids crave a sense of normalcy. Believe it or not, participating in their schooling, being able to see their teachers and classmates fill that void.

ABF’s DLP will provide Captain Poodaman Computer Charging Carts stocked with touchscreen Chromebooks to children’s hospitals throughout the USA to support their remote learning program. In addition, provide personal home computers to families coping with life threatening childhood diseases.
